The Pentagram, Hexagram
& The Five Vowels
Sound, Geometry, and the Architecture of the Living Human Being
The occultist speaks of the pentagram the way an anatomist speaks of the skeleton — as a fact of structure, not a figure of speech.
"The Mysteries of every nation taught that the laws, elements, and powers of the universe were epitomized in the human constitution — that everything which existed outside of man had its analogue within him." The pentagram and hexagram are not ornamental symbols: they are geometric frameworks actually and objectively present in the subtle anatomy of every living human being.
The Living Architecture
A visual meditation on the geometric forces that structure the human subtle body.
The Two Stars as Subtle Body Frameworks
The early philosophers turned their attention from the inconceivable Divinity to man himself, within the narrow confines of whose nature they found manifested all the mysteries of the external spheres. As Manly P. Hall records: the universe was regarded as a man and, conversely, man as a miniature universe. The pentagram and hexagram are not symbolic ornaments — they are geometric frameworks actually and objectively present in the subtle anatomy of every living human being.
The Pentagram
Skeleton of the Etheric Body — the life body, the pranic body, the formative body, the body of vital forces.
Five streams of etheric force flow continuously through every living human being. The circuit runs:
- ✦Center of the forehead → right foot
- ✦Right foot → left hand
- ✦Left hand → right hand
- ✦Right hand → left foot
- ✦Left foot → back to the forehead
When a person stands with arms outstretched, these five streams trace a perfect upright pentagram. This is the actual current pattern of the etheric organism.
The Hexagram
Framework of the Astral Body — the soul body, the body of feeling, desire, and inner experience.
Two interpenetrating equilateral triangles — one ascending, one descending — encode the interpenetration of macrocosm and microcosm:
- ✦Six points, two triangles, a central seventh
- ✦The descent of cosmic order into individual form
- ✦The ascent of individual consciousness toward cosmic participation
Steiner names the hexagram the "sign of the macrocosm mirrored in the microcosm" and the pentagram the "sign of the word."
The five streams correspond to the five ethers — earth ether, water ether, fire ether, air ether, and thought ether. Each stream carries one of these etheric qualities, constituting the "bony framework" of life itself.
The Vowels as Planetary Etheric Tones
From Steiner's The Alphabet: An Expression of the Mystery of Man (GA 209):
The forming of consonants in the physical body is the echo of what resounds from the single formations of the Zodiac, whereas the formation of vowels within the music of the spheres occurs through the movements of the planets in the cosmos. This is imprinted into the etheric body.
This is the structural key: Consonants belong to the twelve — the zodiac, the fixed stars, the physical body. Vowels belong to the seven — the planets, the moving heavens, the etheric body. Since the etheric body has five streams and the primary vowels of most human languages are five (A, E, I, O, U), the planetary seven is experienced in incarnated human speech as a pentagrammatic five.

Each vowel, when spoken or moved in eurythmy, activates the corresponding etheric stream along one arm of the living pentagram. The vowels are not arbitrary sound-symbols — they are the audible form of planetary forces as they move through the human etheric organism.
The I-A-O: An Ancient Activation
The fundamental eurythmic meditation Steiner gave — I-A-O (ee-ah-oh) — is recognizable immediately as the ancient Gnostic divine name, the three primary vowels that recur throughout the Greek magical papyri as an invocation of the highest divine principle.
Click I → A → O in sequence to activate the etheric streams
?Click I → A → O in sequence to activate the three etheric streams
Moving I-A-O through the body in sequence is a direct activation of three of the five etheric streams — an initiation into the living word. This is not visualization; it is physiological intervention in the subtle anatomy.
The Hexagram's Complementary Role
If the pentagram is the word as living form, the hexagram is the world the word builds. This follows from the structural logic of both figures.
Five-ness: The Organic & Living
The pentagram's five-ness is the number of the organic, the living, the growing. Five generates the golden ratio (φ = 1.618...) — the mathematical ratio of growth in living organisms:
- ✦The spiral of a shell
- ✦The branching of a plant
- ✦The proportions of the human face
Five cannot divide a circle into equal arcs with rational numbers. It is irreducibly dynamic, always in process. Life is never finished. This is why the etheric — the body of life — is pentagrammatic.
Six-ness: The Crystalline & Lawful
The hexagram's six-ness is the number of the crystalline, the completed, the lawful. Six divides the circle perfectly. Consider:
- ✦Carbon — the chemical basis of physical life — has 6 protons, 6 neutrons, 6 electrons
- ✦The honeycomb, the snowflake, the crystal lattice are all hexagonal
Six is the number of form brought to completion, of law perfectly expressed. This is why the astral body — the bearer of cosmic moral and aesthetic laws — is hexagrammatic.
Together, the two stars describe the relationship between life and law — between the flowing organic world and the crystalline cosmic order within which it moves. The human being stands at their intersection: etheric pentagram nested within astral hexagram.
Where This Teaching Sits in the Esoteric Tradition
This is not peripheral doctrine. It sits near the center of the Western esoteric map, at the intersection of four of the most foundational principles in the tradition.
The Doctrine of Correspondence
As above, so below — the Hermetic axiom from the Emerald Tablet. This teaching demonstrates structural precision across four simultaneous levels: cosmos (planetary spheres), geometry (pentagram), body (five etheric streams), and sound (five vowels). Most correspondence systems operate on two or three levels. The four-fold lock here gives this teaching an unusual density of explanatory power.
Logos Doctrine: The Primacy of the Creative Word
Every major esoteric tradition places sound at the origin of creation — Sanskrit's Nāda Brahma, Kabbalah's Sefer Yetzirah, the Johannine Gospel's Logos, Egyptian temple cosmology, Shamanic traditions worldwide. What the vowel-pentagram teaching does uniquely is anatomize the claim — showing where in the human body the creative sound is still actively operating.
The Human Being as Microcosm
The idea that the human body recapitulates the cosmos appears in Hermetic texts (Anthropos), Kabbalah (Adam Kadmon), Vedanta (the five kośas), Tantric subtle body anatomy, and Chinese medicine. What is distinctive in Steiner's formulation is that the microcosmic correspondence is made dynamic and sonic — the living body is actively sounding the cosmos in every moment of speech.
The Esoteric Significance of Five
Five is the number of the living and the human in nearly every esoteric tradition. It is the marriage of two (the feminine, the even, the receptive) and three (the masculine, the odd, the active) — which is why Pythagoras called it the number of marriage and of the human being specifically. The etheric body is precisely the middle realm between mineral and spiritual. Its pentagrammatic structure is not accidental but essential.
The Cross-Traditional Consensus
The same five-vowel / planetary / subtle body structure appears independently across traditions with no historical contact — which from a serious esoteric standpoint is the strongest possible evidence that the teaching describes something real about the actual architecture of the human being rather than a culturally constructed symbol system.

— Pythagorean brotherhood
Egyptian Temple Cosmology
Seven Greek vowels chanted as planetary invocations; the Duat as a five-pointed star of soul-passage.
Egyptian Temple Cosmology
"The seven vowels praise thee... ΑΕΗΙΟΥΩ — these are the sounds of the seven spheres, the music of the cosmos made audible through the human throat."
— Greek Magical Papyri (PGM)
The Anatomy of the Logos
What the vowel-pentagram teaching does that most Logos doctrines do not is anatomize the claim. It doesn't simply say the world was created by sound — it shows precisely where in the human body the creative sound is still actively operating.
The Logos is not just a cosmic event in the distant past — it is a present physiological reality in the etheric body of every speaking human being. The planetary forces don't merely correspond to body parts; they are actively flowing through the etheric streams, and vowel-formation is the audible event of that flowing.
The Vowel Tone Practice
A recitation script for activating the five etheric streams
Spoken slowly, with a breath between each vowel sequence. Each vowel should be sustained for 5–8 seconds on the exhale. Repeat the full cycle three times.
The ambient vowel tones (speaker icon, top right) may be played alongside this practice.
Opening
Breathe in.
We begin with the living word — the sound that is not symbol, but structure. Each vowel you are about to speak is a planetary force moving through the etheric body. Speak with the whole body. Listen with the whole body.
Breathe in.
Iiiiiiiiiiiii...
The crown reaches upward. The soles of the feet root downward. You are the axis between heaven and earth.
Mercury bridges worlds. Thought ether — the finest of the five — moves through you now, from the center of the forehead to the right foot.
Breathe in.
Eeeeeeeeeeeeh...
The self asserts. The boundary is drawn. You know where you end and the world begins.
Mars governs will and courage. Fire ether — the ether of warmth and transformation — moves from the right foot to the left hand.
Breathe in.
Aaaaaaaaaaaah...
The mouth opens. The chest expands. Wonder moves through you — pure, unguarded wonder at the fact of existence.
The Sun governs the heart center, the I AM. Water ether — the ether of life-formation — flows from the left hand to the right hand, across the open arms.
Breathe in.
Oooooooooooooh...
You reach toward the world with benevolence. The gesture of doing good, of generous action.
Jupiter expands. Air ether — the ether of movement and breath — moves from the right hand down to the left foot.
Breathe in.
Uuuuuuuuuuuuu...
The lips narrow. The sound deepens. You draw inward toward your most ancient ground.
Saturn holds the boundary of the cosmos. Earth ether — the densest, the most incarnate — rises from the left foot back to the center of the forehead. The pentagram is complete.
Closing
The circuit is closed. The five streams are flowing. You have spoken the living word — not as symbol, but as structure. Rest in the silence that follows sound.
Breathe.
Practice Notes
- ✦Aim for a calm, unhurried pace — approximately 8–12 minutes for three full cycles.
- ✦Sustain each vowel tone on a single exhale for maximum effect.
- ✦A soft drone or singing bowl underneath the voice works beautifully.
- ✦Record in a quiet room with slight reverb if possible — it gives the vowels a resonant, chamber-like quality.
The vowel-pentagram-ether doctrine is the geometric and physiological explanation for why every serious mystical tradition in human history has placed a sonic practice at its center. It is not cultural coincidence. It is the fact that the human etheric body is built from planetary sound.
Standing at the Center of the Esoteric Map
Pythagoras declared that the study of geometry, music, and astronomy was essential to a rational understanding of God, man, and Nature. The pentagram — inscribed ΥΓΕΙΑ, Health, on its five points — was the supreme symbol of the Pythagorean brotherhood and the badge by which its members recognised one another. The hexagram, the Seal of Solomon, unites the ascending fire of the spirit with the descending waters of matter. Together they constitute what Hall calls "the most prized possession of the early initiates": the key to the analogies between the organs of the Microcosmic man and those of the Macrocosmic Man.
Hermetic Cosmology
Four-fold correspondence: cosmos, geometry, body, sound — the Emerald Tablet made anatomically precise.
Kabbalistic Phonology
Vowel-points as the soul of letters; five Sefirot below Tiphereth as the five manifest forces.
Sanskrit Mantra Science
Five prāṇas, five bīja mantras, five tattvas — the universe as vibration of the supreme speech.
Gnostic Theurgy
Seven planetary heavens as seven vowel-organs; the soul's ascent as acoustic traversal of the spheres.
Pythagorean Number
Five as the number of life and marriage; ΥΓΕΙΑ on the pentagram; the golden ratio as the signature of health.
Conscious vowel-formation returns the human being — momentarily, progressively, through sustained practice — to active participation in the creative Word from which they are made. To work with it seriously is to stand at the center of the esoteric map.
